Sometimes it genuinely is Google.

SearchEngineWatch reported in August 2026 that Google was struggling to display favicons for a large number of sites at once, and it wasn’t tied to anything wrong with the individual sites. It’s happened before too, a similar bug hit in October 2022 and Google fixed it within days.

One thing you can rule out either way: Google’s John Mueller has confirmed broad core updates aren’t the reason a favicon disappears from search. If you’ve had a core update land around the same time, that’s a coincidence, not the cause.

Top Reasons & How to Fix a Missing Favicon

There are many reasons why your favicon disappears from Google Search. The main cause is often a server access issue, but it’s worth understanding the rest too, so you can rule them out fast and prevent it from happening again.

1. Website Not Accessible By Google

Based on my tests and the case studies below, the primary reason a favicon disappears is that Googlebot cannot fully or partially access your website. Important: Often you don’t see any warning for this in Google Search Console; you need to dig deep.

What is the root cause?

Hosting companies are dealing with excessive traffic from AI bots and are applying rules to block them. You can also check for 403 errors in your Ahrefs dashboard (If your website is added).

Check for a hard warning in Google Search Console – often visible with heavy restrictions.

If you use Google Merchant Centre, it’s worth checking that everything shows green there too.

On Cloudflare specifically, review your AI Crawl Control settings ahead of 15 September 2026, since Googlebot is classified as mixed-purpose there.

If the block sits at your host’s infrastructure level with no way to fix it yourself, escalate to support or move to a host that gives you that keeps your website globally accessible.

2. Wrong Dimensions or Aspect Ratio

One of the common causes historically. Your favicon has to be a square, at least 8x8px, though anything under 48x48px.

Check the File Dimensions, Not the Preview

Open the actual image file and confirm its exact pixel dimensions, not how it looks in a thumbnail. Consider changing your favicon’s file name too, to force Google to reconsider it fresh.

Case Study: Google Dropped Fav Icon of Multiple Sites, Here’s How I Fixed It

Two real cases, both traced back to the same root cause: Google couldn’t reach the site properly, and the missing favicon was just the visible symptom.

Case Study 1: A WooCommerce Store Blocked by Its Own Cloudflare Rules

A client’s WooCommerce store was getting hit hard by unwanted bot traffic, so the dev team responded by blocking selected overseas locations and applying strict rules in Cloudflare. The restrictions worked against the bad traffic, but they were broad enough that Google’s own crawling started to suffer too, well before the favicon actually disappeared.

I investigated the pattern and worked with the dev team to loosen those restrictions rather than remove bot protection altogether. Once the rules were adjusted, Google’s crawling behaviour returned to normal.

We tested the site’s accessibility from multiple locations to confirm it, then resubmitted the homepage for indexing. The favicon was restored within a few days.

Case Study 2: A Hosting-Level IP Block After a DDoS Attack

Another site’s host responded to a DDoS attack by blocking broad ranges of overseas IP addresses, without notifying the client. The block was wide enough that it also caught Google Bots & AI bots trying to access the site, which was the first sign that something had changed.

Getting the hosting configuration adjusted to restore global accessibility resolved it. It took about 10 days for it to get it restored.

Need Help with Website Indexing?

If you need professional help with website indexing related to favicon issues or beyond, we can help.

We have worked on everything from simple to complex eCommerce websites, helping clients resolve indexing issues.
